Sleepless in Samui

I try not to use this blog as my private whinge fest (well, not too often), but sometimes it is therapeutic to have a bit of a rant online and then get on with life.

I dedicate this blog entry to the not so joyous side of backpacking. It will be short and not so sweet because backpacking is generally a pretty amazing and fun thing. However, there are times when you want to scream, pull your hair out (or the person's next to you) and generally throw yourself on the ground and start having a good old fashioned tantrum. Last night was one of these nights.

After spending an overnight train trip from Bangkok to Samui (i.e. no sleep) our already fragile selves arrived on the beautiful shores of Koh Samui. Having been here several times we headed to some of our favourite guest houses only to discover that two have been knocked down, one was shut and just about every place was under renovation...what is going on??? We managed to find a fairly nice place...a little over our budget...but hey, what are you going to do? Given lack of sleep we tried to have an early night........................

...................then the itching started.....Convinced that we had a renegade mosquito we turned on the lights and went hunting, only to discover weird looking black things popping up randomly on our bed and mushing out blood when you squashed them. Cautious not to jump to the backpacker phantom story of "bed bugs" we did some hunting to discover more and more back things. We turned to Wikipedia...fountain of all knowledge...and confirmed according to the pictures that we did indeed have bed bugs!!!!!!!!!!

After sitting up all night...too paranoid turn off the lights and let the bugs feast on us further, but unable to check out since reception was closed... we checked out this morning and have now moved on to what will hopefully be a bed bug free environment.

AHHH the joys.

Kate signing off....a little tired....with 62 bed bug bites...but a whole lot more informed about the monster that is a bed bug. Thanks wiki.
