KL in review

Welcome to Penang, an island off the west coast of Malaysia, and (according to the locals) home to the best food in the country.

We arrived yesterday and have found this great hostel...well...it is actually called a "guest house" - which I understand to be a hostel minus rodents...mmm...things are looking up! The guy who runs the place is very friendly and assured us about 15 times that the place is "very" clean. So far so good. It didn't take us long to find this great night market to introduce ourselves to Penang cuisine. And as you can see in the picture, I had my first Malaysian Shandy..different but nice.

Anyway, this is meant to be a wrap up on KL, so here is a recap on our week in KL:

One of the highlights for me was going up the Petronas Towers in KL. It is an amazing 88 storey structure that you can see from anywhere in KL. It has a skybridge which connects the towers about half way up. We queued up for about 2 hours to take a lift up to the skybridge (that moved at 4 floors per second) to then spend 8 minutes on th skybridge. I am sure many of you would know my complete phobia of heights...so stepping on to this bridge was a tad nauseating...but the view was incredible.

Another highlight was meeting up with Brendan's pen pal who he starting writing to in year 5, Jo. It was pretty incredible to see two people from different continents who had been in contact on and off for nearly 15 years, meet for the first time. It only occurred to us moments before we met..mmm...I wonder if we will be able to recognise each other??? But thankfully we managed to find each other and had a great night...thanks Jo!

And last but not least, the food....It is no surprise that Brendan and I would love Malaysian food (more chili you say...yes please!). The food in KL was overall pretty great...but you had to go searching. Our dinner on the first night was a true culture shock..but it got better from there. We found the best Laksa in this one man shop down a tiny alley off China Town. It really was something to write home about..literally. And of course...McDonalds. Proud to say we have not ventured under the golden arches...but we did find it particularly amusing that in Malaysia you can get your Maccas delivered to you 24 hours a day...now there is an appealing thought!

Anyway, we obviously can't cover everything we have done here so check out the Malaysian photo album for some interesting photos on our time in KL.

Ok, enough from me. Hope this finds you all well and until next time...

  1. Your Dad, Aunty Sarah and I are sitting here on Mother's day having a drink or two and celebrating being alive. We are house hunting for Aunty Sarah. She thinks Toukley and Budgewoi looks good. Your photos from KL are great. Your night with Jo sounds wonderful. You both look so happy and relaxed. More food photos please! Bus fares in Penang are 1 ringit so a really cheap way to travel. Love to you both
