Ok, so you could probably tell from our last post that we were pretty excited to be in the winter wonderland of South Korea and enjoying frolicking around in the snow. Brendan’s first snow man has now been built (to his credit it was only after a couple of hours of snow so its dwarf like size must be excused), snow ball fights have been had and assistance has been given to drivers that are bogged in knee high snow. Day 4 of continuous snow….and the novelty was starting to wear off.

We are still in Uljin and have enjoyed walking around town and exploring the local country side. We walked to the beach which is about 2km away and it was incredible to see the sand almost completely covered by a foot of snow. Funnily enough we didn’t see any swimmers!
For those of you who don’t know, Brendan and I are joining the ranks of English teachers in South Korea. There are almost 4000 expat English teachers in Korea at the moment. We have been positioned as elementary school teachers (for children between the ages of 8 and 12) at two schools in Uljin county - one of the schools in Uljin and the other is in Jukbyeon.

It looks like we will be living in Jukbyeon which is this beautiful seaside town about a 10 minute bus ride from the slightly bigger town of Uljin. The apartment which we are hoping to live in (which is currently occupied by the teachers we are replacing) sits up on the “Jukbyeon mountain” (more like a mosquito bump than a mountain), but it offers great views of the harbor and nearby beaches.
While there are still many unknowns, one thing is for sure, this will be a very interesting year. A new country, a new job and a chance to really get to know a country and it’s culture. Hopefully next time we do an update we will have a bit more of an idea of what we have got ourselves into. Until then…
